Expand existing volumes

A storage volume is an identifiable unit of data storage. Storage groups are sets of volumes.

Prerequisites

  • Requires HYPERMAX OS 5977 or later (HYPERMAX OS 5977.1125.1125 or later for CKD volumes).
  • You must be logged in as an Administrator.
  • You can expand a volume up to 64 TB (for FBA volumes) or 1,182,006 cylinders (for CKD volumes).
  • When expanding a CKD volume above 565,250 cylinders, the new size must be a multiple of 1113 cylinders. If you specify an amount that is not a multiple, the system rounds it up.
  • Consider consulting with your operating system vendor or cluster vendor for support of online LUN expansion.
  • You cannot expand an FBA volume when any of the following operations are in progress:
    • Free all
    • Reclaim
    • Deallocation
  • Restrictions apply when a volume is:
    • A gatekeeper
    • An ACLX
    • A Celerra FBA
    • An AS400
    • VP encapsulated
    • Being replicated
    • Part of an Open Replicator session
    • A TDAT
  • For CKD volumes, you cannot expand a volume that is:
    • A CKD 3380 volume
    • Marked as Soft Fenced

Steps

  1. Select the storage system.
  2. Select Storage > Volumes, click An icon showing three dots arranged in a vertical row, signifying a menu with more options, and click Expand Volume.
To expand a CKD volume, see Expand CKD volumes.
  3. In the Volume Capacity field of the Expand Volume dialog box, type or select the new capacity of the volume. The Total Capacity and Additional Capacity figures update automatically.
SRDF storage group volume capacity can be expanded using the controls. For SRDF Storage Group volumes, you must specify an SRDF group number so that the dialog allowing you to remote volumes can also be displayed (see Expand remote volumes).
    NOTE:

In 10.1.0.0, there has been a change in the rounding of GB/TB/MB to cylinders when creating or expanding a volume. Creating or expanding a volume in TB/GB/MB in some scenarios results in a volume slightly smaller or slightly larger than if you had created the same size volume in TB/GB/MB in release 10.0, for example, creating a 2TB vol is 1118481 Cyl in 10.1.0.0 , but in 10.0 a 2TB vol is 1118482 Cyl).

If you want to create a volume in 10.1.0.0 and need to guarantee that it exactly matches the size of a volume that was created using 10.0, you must specify the volume size in Cylinders and not TB/GB/MB when creating or expanding.

  4. To reserve the volume, select Reserve Volumes.
  5. Do one of the following:
    • Click Run Now to perform the operation now.
    • Expand Run Now and click Add to Job List to add this task to the job list, from which you can schedule or run the task at your convenience. For more information, see Schedule jobs and Preview jobs.
If the volume is a SRDF/Metro volume , clicking Run Now or expanding Run Now and clicking Add to Job List results in the display of the Expand Remote Volumes dialog (see Expand remote volumes).
